Icehotel
Jukkasjärvi, Sweden
Every winter the hotel is built again. Blocks of ice are cut from the Torne River, and artists from around the world design individual suites, so no two seasons look the same. In spring it melts back into the river.
Nights in the ice rooms are spent at about minus five degrees, on a bed of ice with reindeer hides and a thermal sleeping bag. Staff brief guests before bedtime. Warm rooms and cabins sit nearby, and many guests split a stay between the two.
A permanent building, Icehotel 365, keeps a set of art suites frozen all year round. Jukkasjärvi is a small village north of the Arctic Circle, close to Kiruna airport. Dog sledding, snowshoe trips and river walks fill the days.
