Capsule Hotels

Three Japanese capsule hotels where the pod is the room and the shared baths do the rest.

How a capsule stay works

You book a bed-sized pod, not a room. Bags go in a locker, washing happens in shared baths, and the lounge is where you spend waking hours.

All three entries are in Japan, where the format began, and all three are men-only properties. That is a real limit, so it is stated up front. Rules on age and check-in times are usually stricter than at a standard hotel.

01

Capsule Land Yushima

Yushima, Bunkyo, Tokyo, Japan

This is the classic Tokyo format. Guests sleep in stacked pods, change in a locker area and use shared baths with a sauna. The lounge doubles as the place to read, eat a convenience-store dinner or wait for the rain to stop.

Yushima sits between Ueno and Ochanomizu. Ueno Park, the Ameyoko market street and several rail lines are within walking distance, so the pod is a base rather than a destination.

Two practical notes. It is a men-only property, and age and check-in rules are stricter than at a standard hotel, so read the conditions before booking.

Sauna & Capsule Hotel Greenland Nakasu

Nakasu, Fukuoka, Japan

Nakasu is the island district between two rivers in central Fukuoka, known for its evening food stalls. Greenland sits in the middle of it. The format pairs capsules with a large bath, a sauna and an in-house restaurant.

Most guests treat the bath as the main event and the pod as the place to sleep after it. Capsules are lined up in rows over two levels, with lockers for luggage.

It is men only. Hakata Station and Tenjin are each a short subway ride away, which makes it a practical stop on a rail trip through Kyushu.

HEARTS Capsule Hotel & Spa Nakasu

Nakasu, Fukuoka, Japan

A second Nakasu address, and a different take. HEARTS keeps the spa at the centre of the stay. The capsules are compact and orderly, and the bathing floor is where the hotel spends its effort.

Once checked in, guests can move between bath, lounge and pod without going back outside. That suits a late arrival or an early train.

Like its neighbour, it accepts men only. Canal City and the riverside stalls are close by on foot.
